Southern Wesleyan is excited to announce the promotion of Trey Stewart to Head Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Coach.
“I am excited to see Coach Stewart lead the program here at Southern Wesleyan University,” said Director of Athletics Julia Reininga. “He has worked his way up through the ranks and is ready for this next step. As a mainstay in the program and a Godly leader, he is well-prepared to guide our teams to success.”
Stewart joined the Warriors team in 2021 as an assistant coach for both the Cross Country and Track and Field programs. He worked directly with both the distance and cross country runners during that time. In the Fall of 2023, Stewart was promoted to Head Cross Country Coach for Southern Wesleyan. Under his guidance, the Warriors saw several athletes in both the men’s and women’s programs (Ronan O’Neill, Thomas Macagg, Drew Jones, Abbey Frock, Macey Morgan and Merritt Smith) receive All-Conference recognition. Ronan O’Neill went on to be named the Men’s Cross Country Freshman of the Year during the 2022 season and then went on to receive Cross Country Runner of the Year honors in 2023.
On the track side of Warrior athletics, the distance team has flourished under Stewart’s instruction. At the conclusion of the Indoor 2024 season, Southern Wesleyan’s distance medley relay team (Drew Jones, Ethan Marchman, Grady Clark and Jaden Warner) claimed first team honors and Ronan O’Neill took first in both the 5000 and 3000 meters. In the Outdoor 2024 season, O’Neill went on to take second in both the 5000 and 10000 meters. On the women’s side, Abbey Frock took third in the 3000 meter steeplechase to receive All-Conference third team honors. Southern Wesleyan’s distance team broke 11 school records in Indoor and five school records in Outdoor at the conclusion of the 2023-24 Track and Field season.
Prior to coming to Southern Wesleyan, Stewart worked as the assistant coach for Cross Country and Track and Field at Shannon Forest Christian School from 2019 to the spring of 2020. He also served as a volunteer track coach for the City of Greenville in 2018 where he assisted in organizing practices and sharing knowledge on the sport of Track & Field.
Stewart attended North Greenville University in college where he competed for the Crusaders while completing his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Exercise Science in 2019. He was a two time All-Conference Third Team finisher in the 800 meters at the Conference Championship. In March of 2019 at the Florida Relays, he was a member of the 4×800 meter relay team who finished with a time of 7:58.79 to set the current school record in that event.
“I am beyond grateful and humbled to accept this new position,” commented Stewart. “Southern Wesleyan is a place that I have grown to call home. When I look back over the past three years all I can say is ‘God.’ He has allowed the success that this program has seen. God has His hand on this place and I am excited for the future of both the Track and Cross Country programs.”
