The Easley High School Athletic Department would like to introduce Mr. Sam Houston as our new Head Football Coach. Coach Houston is a former Easley High School player and the current Interim Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator of the Green Wave.
Coach Houston began his coaching tenure at EHS in March 2019 as the Inside Linebackers Coach before transitioning to Co-Defensive Coordinator under Head Coach Jordan Durrah in May of 2020. Coach Houston was promoted to Defensive Coordinator in February 2023 and assumed the Interim Head Coaching duties on March 15, 2024. Prior to coming back to EHS, Coach Houston began his coaching career in August 2017 as a Graduate Assistant at his alma mater of North Greenville University.
As a player at NGU, Coach Houston was a four-year starter at the inside linebacker position for the Crusaders. He was recognized in 2015, during his junior season, as the Defensive Team MVP. He followed those accolades up during his senior campaign by being honored as a Team Captain, Team MVP, and led the Crusaders to a quarterfinal game in the NCAA-D2 Football Playoffs. Coach Houston currently holds the career record for tackles at NGU.
Coach Houston graduated with Honors from EHS in 2013. As a member of the EHS Green Wave Football Program, Coach Houston was a 3-year starter at inside linebacker while being named Team Captain for his senior season. He was also inducted into the Easley High School Hall of Fame in his first season of eligibility in 2018.
“I am excited to see Coach Houston continue to build on the strong foundation and culture that has been established in our program”, commented EHS Principal Josh Oxendine. “Coach Houston is a product of our community and this program and I know our community will support him as the new leader of Green Wave Football. It is a great time to be a Green Wave and I look forward to Coach Houston leading our team as we transition to 5A.”
Easley Athletic Director Gill Payne added, “EHS is very excited to have such a valuable asset as Coach Houston on campus and eager to move the program forward. He loves Easley and is the right person to continue to build upon the strong foundation that he has been a part of building over the past 5 years.”
“I’m so excited for the opportunity to lead this program and mentor these young men. Easley holds a special place in my heart and I can’t wait to get to work,” stated Coach Houston.
Coach Houston has a Bachelor Degree in Criminal Justice and Legal Studies along with a Masters in Education both from North Greenville University. He will begin his new duties immediately.
There will be a community meet and greet scheduled for Coach Houston later this spring.
