The 42nd annual juried art show will continue to be on display at the Pickens County Museum of Art & History through November 9, 2024. The show was judged by juror Fleming Markel, and the opening reception was held on Saturday, October 12. Winners selected were as follows: First Place Winner – Juniper Number 1 by Todd Anderson from Clemson, Second Place Winner – Indigo by Austin Sheppard from Hartsville, Third Place Winner – Lindley Park by Brittany Gilbert from Florence, People’s Choice Award Winner – Geirangerfjord / Dronnings Stol (Queen’s Throne) by Erika Strickland from Taylors.

“The Juried Art Show this year was a great success for the museum,” Pickens County Museum Director Nick McKinney told The Pickens County Chronicle. “We had double the amount of entries as we did last year. We had over 233 works submitted for the show, to be judged by our juror, Fleming Markel.” McKinney said that entries came from all across the state of South Carolina, including from Conway, Florence, and Greenville and the Upstate. “So, I’m very excited with that,” he said, “because the whole point of the show is to be a showcase of South Carolina’s artistic talent.

“I’m very excited for that show. We have, I believe, 85 pieces upstairs in our main galleries. Each one is wonderful. The show came together beautifully. Sometimes, it’s a little bit difficult when you do a juried show, because each piece can maybe not relate to the other. It’s not the same as if you do a solo show, but the show came together. It looks wonderful. I’m so excited to have that show up. And we had a great turnout for our reception. I think we had around 225 to 250 people at our reception, which is wonderful. It was great for the artists. Everyone was there supporting each other. A lot of the community came out. So, it is very exciting. It’s a lot of fun. Working with the artists is wonderful. The show, I think, is one of the better shows that we’ve had at the museum in a long time. So, I’m very excited about it.”

The Pickens County Museum is located at 307 Johnson Street in Pickens, at the corner of Johnson Street and Pendleton Street (Highway 178), across from Pickens City Hall.
