Reflections: Jimmy Buffett passed one year ago on September 1

Singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett passed away one year ago on September 1, from a rare form of skin cancer called Merkel cell carcinoma.

Buffett created his own genre of music, and he was the captain for so many of us who love the ocean. His music was a lifestyle, or a wished-for life, if only for the moments when listening to his music about the ocean. I’ve been a fan since I was kid, of Jimmy Buffett and of the ocean.

Here are a couple of videos of his songs.

“Bubbles Up”, a song he co-wrote, was released one week after his passing. The term ‘bubbles up’ means following bubbles to the water’s surface to regain orientation and avoid drowning.

“The Captain and the Kid” is a song he wrote about his relationship with his late grandfather, a steamship captain.
