On January 16, 2025, The Hagood Mill Historic Site is proud to announce the launch of the Hagood Mill Foundation Rock Art Project, a new initiative dedicated to the recording, protection, and preservation of culturally significant rock art in South Carolina and the surrounding regions.
This project builds on the legacy of the South Carolina Rock Art Survey and addresses the growing loss of rock art due to development, environmental factors, and vandalism. Key goals include:
Discovery and Documentation: Identifying and recording new rock art sites.
Protection and Preservation: Coaching landowners on preservation techniques and relocating artifacts when necessary to ensure their survival.
Education and Advocacy: Raising awareness of the importance of rock art and its cultural significance.
The event will also highlight the rediscovery of the “Sheriff Rock,” a culturally significant artifact engraved with mysterious markings. Lost for decades, this remarkable piece of history has been safely returned and is now on display at the South Carolina Rock Art Center at Hagood Mill.
A special event to celebrate these milestones will take place on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Hagood Mill Historic Site. The public is invited to attend, hear the full story of the “Sheriff Rock,” and learn more about the preservation efforts being launched.
“This initiative ensures that South Carolina’s rock art and its incredible stories will endure for generations to come,” said Michael Bramlett.
