Pickens County alerted citizens Thursday night, February 6 that a fire at the Pickens County landfill was contained and would be monitored during the night, but that smoke was still visible in the area and anyone with respiratory problems should stay indoors until the smoke clears. Pickens County also asked that travel be avoided near the landfill, on Old Liberty Road, to allow emergency personnel to move easily and quickly in the area. As of Thursday night, the cause of the fire had not been determined.
Update on Friday morning, February 7:
Pickens County updated the public on Friday morning, stating that the landfill would be closed until further notice but that the recycle center area and mulch area would be open and would operate on regular schedule.
The County advised that fire and smoke might still be visible, as the area is still an active fire scene and would be closely monitored by emergency personnel. The County stated that the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services was at the site and that there was no threat to the public.
Update from Pickens County the morning of February 9:
The fire is contained but may still be visible, and it will continue to smolder for a couple of days. It remains closely monitored by fire and landfill personnel. The South Carolina Department of Environmental Services is aware and has been on scene. Those in the vicinity with respiratory issues should continue to limit time outdoors until it clears. All recycle centers are temporarily unable to accept brown goods as a result of the landfill being closed. Staff expects to assess and provide an update on when they can begin accepting brown goods early this week.
