Mable Owens Clarke and Dr. John Coggeshall (professor of anthropology at Clemson University) spoke about the historic Soapstone Baptist Church in the Liberia community of Pickens County during a special presentation at Easley’s Captain Kimberly Hampton Memorial Library the afternoon of Sunday, February 15, 2026.
Soapstone Baptist Church was established in 1865 by freed slaves and was rebuilt in 1968 after being burned by arsonists a year earlier.
