Pickens County Council passes resolution acknowledging historical significance of Greenville-Pickens Speedway

During its meeting the evening of Monday, April 20, 2026, members of Pickens County Council unanimously voted in favor of a resolution to acknowledge the historical significance of the Greenville-Pickens Speedway in Easley. As The Chronicle reported on April 7, County Council voted during their meeting the evening of April 6 to draft the resolution and vote on it April 20.

 

The resolution reads as follows: 

 

“WHEREAS, Pickens County, South Carolina (the “Pickens County”) is a political subdivision of the State of South Carolina and is authorized to enact regulations, resolutions, and ordinances, not inconsistent with the Constitution and general law of this State, including the exercise of general powers in relation to safety within the community as it appears to be necessary and proper for the security, general welfare, and convenience of the County and preserving health, peace, order, and good government within the County; and

 

“WHEREAS, the Greenville Pickens Speedway, located in Pickens County, South Carolina, has been a longstanding landmark within the community and holds a unique place in the history of motorsports in the State of South Carolina and beyond; and

 

“WHEREAS, the Greenville Pickens Speedway has served for decades as a gathering place for residents, families, racing enthusiasts, and visitors and the Speedway has historical significance through its association with stock car racing and regional sporting traditions.

 

“WHEREAS, Pickens County Council further recognizes the interest expressed by citizens and stakeholders regarding the future of the Greenville Pickens Speedway property;

 

“NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Pickens County Council, duly assembled:

  1. Pickens County Council hereby recognizes the historical significance of the Greenville Pickens Speedway.
  2. Pickens County Council expresses its support for good faith efforts by property owners, community stakeholders, preservation groups, and other interested parties to consider opportunities to preserve, commemorate, or appropriately honor the legacy of the Greenville Pickens Speedway.
  3. This Resolution is ceremonial and declaratory in nature and does not create any zoning classification, land use restriction, regulatory designation, property right, or legal obligation affecting the subject property or any owner thereof.
  4. Nothing in this Resolution shall be construed as binding Pickens County to any expenditure of public funds, acquisition, regulatory action, or future land use decision.”
