Pickens County Journalism Since 1999
During a special Liberty & Legacy event sponsored by Pickens County’s Fort Prince George Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and the Pickens County 250 Committee, Rick Wise, Executive Director of the South Carolina Battleground Preservation Trust, spoke and gave a slideshow presentation about the American Revolutionary War, with an emphasis on South Carolina’s role. The event, titled Revolutionary War 101, was held at the Captain Kimberly Hampton Memorial Library in Easley the afternoon of Sunday, February 8, 2026.
Joyce Hansel, Regent of the Fort Prince George DAR Chapter, welcomed the audience, and Carolyn Nations, Chair of the Pickens County 250 Committee, led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag. Nations also invited Pickens County citizens to join the Pickens County 250 Committee. (Nations may be contacted at CLBradley214@gmail.com.)

Following Wise’s slideshow presentation, Hansel spoke about the South Carolina Battleground Preservation Trust. “We have to support this,” she said. “As South Carolinians, if we want our history to remain alive, we need to invest in programs like Liberty Trail and the South Carolina Battleground Preservation Trust. It takes money to make these things happen.” (The website for the South Carolina Battleground Preservation Trust is https://www.scbattlegroundtrust.org/.)
Wise then told the audience about the Francis Marion Papers, a digital collection of more than 600 documents regarding Revolutionary War General Francis Marion, nicknamed The Swamp Fox. “The Francis Marion papers are absolutely free,” he said. “The first two volumes are out. The third volume will be out on the 27th of this month. We’re going to announce that release at the Francis Marion Commemoration Ceremony, the anniversary date of his death. Annually, there is an event there at his gravesite, and we will announce the release of the third volume. And this is your taxpaper money. The late Charles Baxley was the first commissioner for 250th Commission. His intent was that everyone would have access to this at no cost.”
