Pickens County Journalism Since 1999

Walmart customers in Pickens were welcomed inside the newly transformed Supercenter at 2637 Gentry Memorial Hwy, Pickens this morning, August 22, as the much-anticipated project is now complete. Walmart associates marked the occasion this morning with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, community celebration, and the unveiling of a community-inspired mural. The event was attended by local Pickens organizations and elected officials, including Pickens County Sheriff’s Office K9 Foundation and Fostering Love, Inc.
“At Walmart, enhancing our customers’ shopping experience is always a priority,” said Tonya Bovain, Walmart store manager. “We’re thrilled to unveil to our customers a variety of new features and improvements at our store that will ultimately allow us to better serve the Pickens community. A big thank you to our dedicated associates and our store leadership teams for their exceptional efforts throughout the renovation.”
During this morning’s celebration, store leaders and associates highlighted the transformation as well as the new interactive features available to customers, including:
In addition, Walmart customers in Pickens now have access to a wider assortment of products—and, with online pickup, delivery, express delivery, and Walmart Pay, they can get what they want, when they want it, all while enjoying an even better shopping experience.
To further illustrate Walmart’s commitment helping people live better in the communities it serves, the store manager presented $2,000 in grants to local nonprofit organizations, $1,000 to the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office K9 Foundation and $1,000 to Fostering Love, Inc.
The ceremony concluded with the exciting unveiling of the town’s new mural, designed and illustrated by artist Trudy Tran. This mural celebrates the stunning natural trails and sites that make Pickens unique. The mural draws inspiration from the Pickens Azalea Festival and the Doodle Trail. Here, friends and families gather each spring at the Pickens Azalea Festival, a South Carolina tradition for more than 40 years, celebrating the vibrant blooms and community spirit, and the Doodle Trail traces the shared railroad history between Pickens and Easley, offering a perfect way to enjoy the outdoors while honoring the area’s industrial past. Together, these elements create a portrait of a community nestled by the Blue Ridge Mountains, celebrating vibrant blooms and community spirit and honoring a shared railroad history.
This mural is part of Walmart’s Community Mural Program, which is one of the largest public-facing art installation celebrating communities across America. As a key element of each store transformation, the program reinforces Walmart’s ongoing commitment to honoring and supporting the local community.
